In February 2020 Jens Ludwig Director of the University of Chicago’s Crime Lab told a City Club of Chicago audience; one of the most important things that keeps people out of the criminal justice system is education. It's one of the most important protective factors against justice system involvement.
In June 2023 Chalkbeat Chicago reported 45,000 teens and young adults are not in school, college, or the workforce.
When Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union provide students who are not on a path to a bachelor's degree a relative and practical curriculum, neighborhood crime will dramatically decrease in Chicago.
I hope Mayor Brandon Johnson's community safety plan will have an immediate impact on decreasing neighborhood crime.
