Charter Schools vs. Traditional Public Schools

Charter schools and the traditional public schools in lower income Black (African American) neighborhoods have the tough task of helping students to transcend their social environment.   The quality of leadership, teaching, and school culture has to be more powerful than the effects of poverty and generational ignorance.

The battle between charter schools and the traditional public schools is a waste of time if neither have developed an education model that constantly produces a high percentage of students that graduate from college, or at least successfully complete some form of post secondary education.

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. - Buddha

I believe, as I suspect most people do, that the potential for change among human beings is virtually limitless.   But I also believe----- and my work on this book has strengthened this belief---- that it takes a truly exceptional person to transcend his or her social environment and that we are shaped (and limited) by our backgrounds and by the thinking of our generation more than we know or are comfortable admitting, even to ourselves.

"The tragedy is that society (your school, your boss, your government, your family) keeps drumming the genius part out. The problem is that our culture has engaged in a Faustian bargain, in which we trade our genius and artistry for apparent stability."

“Cultural legacies are powerful forces. They have deep roots and long lives. They persist, generation after generation, virtually intact, even as the economic and social and demographic conditions that spawned them have vanished, and they play such a role in directing attitudes and behavior that we cannot make sense of our world without them.”

Educated Skilled and Ready To Work

The Black Lives Matter movement is very necessary but there should be a movement that will focus on stopping the crime in low income Black neighborhoods.

Where is the "movement" that will ensure young Black men have a good education, a skill, and a work ethic?

Who's Fault Is That?

Only 8 of 100 freshmen who enter Chicago public high schools manage to get a college diploma.

Who's fault is that?   The Parents?  The students?  The Chicago Public Schools?  The Chicago Teachers Union?   Poverty?

Attending a four year college right out of high school  is not the best choice for most CPS students, but all students should be prepared for some form of post secondary education.

What do you think?

Crime Would Dramatically Decrease

Mayor Rahm Emanuel

City Hall
121 N La Salle
Chicago, IL 60602

Mayor Emanuel:

I would guess almost 100% of Chicago's criminals attended a Chicago Public School.  When these young men were is school teachers could accurately guess which students would become criminals.

Mayor Emanuel do you think if every CPS student could at least read and write at grade level crime would dramatically decrease in Chicago?

Thanks!
